SmartSleep Citizen Science

smartsleep research

SmartSleep Citizen Science is documenting the social and behavioral mechanisms that make some people active on their smartphone during night-time hours when they would typically sleep.

In 2018, we invited all Danish adults aged 16 and over to participate in a survey about their smartphone and sleep habits. This was done in collaboration with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) and its morning radio show "Good morning P3". For one week in November 2018, DR focused on the theme of smartphone use and sleep, which raised awareness and helped to engage the public in the research project. During this week, more than 25,000 Danish adults responded to the survey.

SmartSleep Citizen Science used a citizen science approach. Citizen science is when members of the general public actively participate in and contribute to scientific research, which creates interaction and a dialogue between citizens and researchers. The researchers in SmartSleep Citizen Science are using the public's responses and experiences to gain a better understanding of people's smartphone and sleep habits.
